Looking at the volcanic core from the town perched high on the volcano's caldera. The "Minoan Eruption" in 1600 BC buried the town of Akrotiri, now an archaeological site on the main island. I visited here in May 1979 with Greg Virgo and like true tourists rode a donkey from the old port up to the town and took a boat out to the island to peer into the smoking crater.
